At Atrium, our three core values are diversity of thought, authenticity, and initiative. All three are at the center of Atrium’s Pledge 1% partnership and Cultivate program, founded in September 2020, with a mission to give back by donating time and expertise to nonprofit customers and charitable organizations.

When searching for a new volunteer opportunity that aligned with Cultivate, one of Atrium’s consultants reconnected with the Linda W. Daniel Foundation (LWDF) and decided to champion an internal Atrium volunteer program to support the LWDF’s #MoveMeMonday (MMM) campaign. As Mondays are a notoriously difficult day to get momentum, MMM encourages the LWDF’s social media followers to get moving on Mondays through various forms of exercise. They then turn that exercise — measured by “beats” — into funds donated to top-tier cancer research facilities on the participant’s behalf.

As per the LWDF: “Each Monday, for every mile participants run, walk, bike, swim, etc. or 15 minutes they exercise, participants earn 1 beat. For every beat shared via [The LWDF’s] social media channels or website, the LWDF raises $1 to support select cancer organizations on a one-for-one basis. Anyone anywhere can participate.” Atrium ran with this idea, and pledged an additional $3 for every beat an employee generated.

Over the course of four Mondays in May and June 2021, the Atrium team contributed a total of 977 beats, raising $2,931 for the LWDF. A collective 14,655 minutes of exercise generated those beats, with 75 unique teammates participating remotely across the U.S. and in India. Those funds went to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s patient navigation program, which supports Dana Farber’s most vulnerable patients. The Atrium team is proud to not only reframe the conversation around exercise and team building at a distance, but most importantly, raise funds together for a meaningful cause.

At Smooth Consulting, we are committed to generously giving back and have committed to Pledge 1%. We donate to select charities throughout the year and to plan to contribute in greater ways as the business continues to grow! Our founder, Anna Forbes, has been actively volunteering with a local Toronto, Canada non-profit called Future Possibilities For Kids (FPK) whose mission is to coach children to believe in themselves and lead community change.

Anna has participated as a KidCoach in their Ready, Set Goal! Program for 2 years now. The program teaches fundamentals of leadership, starting with building confidence, and encourages each child to set, and achieve their goal of contribution based on an area of interest and impact. As an advocate of empowered leadership, Anna appreciates the incredible value of the program and feels it’s a program that could benefit most adults too!

On December 7, 2021 FPK will be celebrating 20 years of Kids, leadership, and community. They play an integral role in the lives of children and their communities. It’s an honour and privilege to participate in such an incredible commitment to our future leaders.

This year, I’m most proud of how we’ve engaged our Contentstack employees and their extended families in some of our pledge initiatives. These have been strong culture reinforcers for the organization.

When you see team members as the whole people they are — with kids they’re doing homework with or shuttling to practices, elder parents they’re caring for, or nieces and nephews they’re helping build lego sets — it tells you a lot about who they are. It also brings you closer as an organization.

Two special moments got us closer to the kids. We put together a reading night for our Contentstack tribe and their little ones for International Literacy Day. Employees volunteered to read out loud in a virtual event and kids across the company participated. They each also received books in the mail courtesy of Contentstack to help feed their love for language.

We also brought attention to International Day of the Girl with this video. Girls are powerful, resilient, imaginative and thoughtful — but we didn’t ask stakeholders to take it from us. Our employees’ daughters shared what they want to be when they grow up and also told stories of girls who changed the world. We found we have future inventors, pediatricians, paleontologists, doctors, conservationists, activists, and more in our midst. We also donated to GirlUp, an organization dedicated to helping girls pursue their dreams and expand opportunities worldwide.

And, in a year when COVID ravaged the world, we made vaccines available to our employees and their families in Virar, India, Contentstack’s engineering hub. In just two days, we administered 421 vaccinations. We also raised $75,000 for additional COVID relief in the region. Our employees came to work while dealing with sickness and stress. We wanted to help them feel safe and supported, and stay healthy.

For us, it was a year of getting closer as people as the pandemic still by and large kept us physically apart. That closeness — spurred on by lifting each other and our communities up together — also made us stronger.

It often begins with a book. The Power of One, by Bryce Courtenay, is about a boy navigating his way through adult dysfunction, peer bullying, and kindness from caretakers that fuels his maturation and intelligence. Companies and communities understand the power and impact 1% can generate. Through cultivating relationships with local business owners, the Room to Read New Jersey Chapter has helped foster a local/global connection through promoting New Jersey based entrepreneurs with a multicultural global mindset. The focus on books, literacy, and language made Room to Read an ideal Pledge 1% charity partner for Language Lizard.

Language Lizard, a New Jersey based, woman-owned business, offers multicultural children’s books in over 60 languages to school districts, literacy organizations, and bilingual families to support dual language learners and promote multicultural education. Founder and CEO Anneke Forzani, understanding the global impact of Room to Read, was particularly impressed with Room to Read’s Book Publishing program. Room to Read conducts writer and illustrator workshops and collaborates with authors and illustrators, building talent in-country and teaching life long skills that will support literacy around the world long into the future.

“Members of the Language Lizard team continue to support Room to Read both financially and with their time, most recently providing support for a large fundraiser to help build a library in Cambodia. This year, the company’s gifts to suppliers will include a donation to Room to Read along with some festive treats from another Room to Read supporter.” says Forzani.

The Language Lizard and Room to Read collections support literacy and diversity education in many ways. The Language Lizard Living in Harmony series promotes kindness, inclusion, and community. For example, the book We Can All Be Friends shows how much we have in common even though we are all different. Illustrations include diverse characters and settings from around the world, allowing children to see themselves in the book and learn about the world around them. All books also include free lesson plans to help teachers build community in the classroom.

The Room to Read Peace and Equality book series brought together diverse writers and illustrators from the United States for a “book sprint” to create 10 book titles in just four weeks on the theme of creating a more peaceful and equal world. Each book was made by a team of four creators. The series covers a range of engaging stories, from highlighting the contributions of Black inventors, to the importance of the U.S. census, to the experience of a Palestinian refugee in the U.S.

With common goals to promote reading and the development of creative, multicultural content, Language Lizard looks forward to continuing to support Room to Read in building a better future for kids around the world.

From day one, our founders believed that companies should positively contribute to society. Study.com has donated $23 million in-kind value across our various social impact programs, including millions to help schools during the pandemic, and we’re thrilled to join the Pledge 1% movement this year to continue these contributions.

At Study.com, we’re committed to strengthening and diversifying America’s teacher pipeline. This pipeline, the backbone of our education system, is facing a looming shortage of teachers that’s been exacerbated over the past eighteen months by pandemic challenges. Study.com provides access to tools to increase the number of novice teachers entering the field and to bolster the credentials of the veterans.

We’re proud to share that our test prep programs have supported over 30,000 educators prepare to sit for certification exams. These exams often prevent otherwise qualified educators from reaching the classroom, especially teachers of color. We’ve partnered with the California Center on Teaching Careers to provide access to Study.com’s CSET test prep courses, serving mostly rural areas of California. We’ve awarded Teacher Certification Scholarships of financial assistance and access to a variety of test prep materials for prospective teachers across the country. And most recently, we’ve committed to providing 600 test prep scholarships for aspiring teachers in Nevada, which will meet 20% of the state’s annual need of 3,000 new teachers. Nevada is one of the most diverse states in the country and facing one of the most critical shortages of new educators.

Most of my students identify as special ed students. Regardless of their learning disabilities, I give them all hope. I encourage each of my students to go beyond high school and purse their dreams. My motto is, ‘If you think it, you can do it,’” said LaCarrianne Kirkland, recent recipient of a Study.com teacher certification scholarship.

Teacher credentialing is a game changer for educators, but so is having the right tools at their fingertips to help their students succeed. Through our partnership with Donors Choose, Study.com has donated subscriptions to hundreds of educators and provided online learning access for 40,000 students, primarily from Title 1 schools.

“Study.com helped even the playing field by providing additional support for students in need,” said Dr. Nathan of the Brooklyn Studio Secondary School, whose Donors Choose project provided learning support for 150 students at a full-inclusion high school in a high poverty neighborhood.

The microlearning format of Study.com provides opportunity for faster achievement gains, and allows educators to close learning gaps for those students for whom distance learning has caused a widening of the gap— especially Black students, Hispanic students, and students with disabilities.

Study.com is committed to finding ways to support teachers. We provide opportunities for professional growth, believe in enhancing teacher diversity in classrooms, and expand the possibilities of granting resources to classrooms in need across the country. Happy #GivingTuesday from all of us at Study.com!

staybeautifulfoundation - Chris Sharkey.jpg

Konnectryx was honored to have the opportunity to donate its time and expertise in 2021 to The Stay Beautiful Foundation. This foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides beauty and wellness boxes each month to over 500 women (aka “beauties”) who have been affected by cancer. These “Beauty Boxes” contain donated health and wellness products from generous retailers like Milk Makeup, lululemon, and Vital Proteins. The Stay Beautiful Foundation assembles, packs, and ships these beauty boxes to the women in their community.

With the recent partnerships with brands like lululemon, Stay Beautiful quickly ramped up from 200 beauties to over 500 within just a few months. With this increase in demand, the limitations of their current fulfilment process became apparent. The foundation’s founder, Ashleigh Cortes, recognized their systems were not flexible enough to meet their needs, and their inventory system was too complex. These issues made fulfilment too labor intensive and time consuming for this small nonprofit.

When Ashleigh sought out help, ShipStation, an ecommerce shipping platform provider, donated software licenses to the foundation. To install and integrate the new shipping software with Stay Beautiful’s Salesforce CRM and existing tech stack, ShipStation connected Ashleigh with one of its trusted implementation partners, Konnectryx.

Within weeks, Konnectryx improved the efficiency of The Stay Beautiful Foundation’s entire organization by installing a comprehensive, cloud-based solution. This new solution improved almost every aspect of Stay Beautiful’s organization.

Highlights include:

With a unique combination of donated product licenses from ShipStation, and donated time and expertise from Konnectryx, The Stay Beautiful Foundation can keep up with increasing demand and deliver the gift of beauty to thousands of women fighting cancer around the world.

During the month of September, o9 launched a global challenge to clean the planet. Combining the power of AI technology and our o9 community, we managed to collect, tag, and dispose of 29.000 pieces of litter in 17 different countries.

Screen Shot 2021-11-27 at 4.58.48 AM.png

This initiative was part of the Global Week to Act for UN SDGs that took place in September and reached a record-breaking 100 million+ actions and mobilized 1,280 organizations and millions of activists in 191 countries. Read more about the o9 Cleans contribution as part of the Global Week to Act for SDGs here.

The o9 Cleans initiative also supported the World Cleanup Day 2021. This event helps raise awareness among our employees and other stakeholders about the importance of cooperation and collaboration when it comes to tackling global environmental issues such as waste management.

For this challenge, we partnered with Litterati, an app that allows users to measure and monitor the objects, materials, and packaging littering their streets. The LitterAI tool then builds a litter database to inform policy, influence packaging, and inspire personal responsibility. Below you can find some of the data that was collected during this initiative:

Areas of collection:

Top categories collected:

  • Drinks

  • Food

  • Smoking

Top objects collected:

  • Wrapper

  • Cigarette butt

  • Label

Top materials collected:

  • Plastic

  • Paper

  • Aluminium

We also used the Litterati app to run a regional competition, awarding the o9 region that achieved the highest number of pieces of litter collected with the o9 Cleans 2021 Trophy.

Here is how Simon Joiner, one of the top contributors, describes his experience during the o9 Cleans initiative:

“One of the reasons why I’m so pleased to be an o9er is the company’s commitment to doing the right thing for our planet. I found the Litterati app to be like a mobile game with images, categories, maps, and leaderboards; it’s fun to use! Picking up litter quickly became rather addictive but this is no game. I connected closer to my surroundings and better understood the magnitude of the abuse we are doing with our careless lifestyles. What was clear from the o9 cleans initiative was that what really matters is our commitment to change. Download Litterati onto your mobile and create a team. Get out and about, clean your environment, and make a difference!”

It’s always inspiring to see our o9ers challenging themselves to help the planet and we want to thank everyone for always stepping up and responding to initiatives that have a positive impact on our communities and environment.

Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to all contributors. We are already looking forward to our next o9 social impact global challenge!

Giving Tuesday, the global movement to encourage and celebrate philanthropy and a commitment to social impact was founded in 2012 as a response to the consumption-heavy holiday shopping season. The goal is to inspire the same excitement that might be had when purchasing the latest electronics and apply it to supporting nonprofits and other charitable organizations that work to improve our world.

In 2020, Giving Tuesday generated $2.47 billion in support, a 25% increase over 2019 and a clear indication that despite our collective health, economic and environmental challenges, people remain committed to giving back. The news is worth celebrating, but given the scale of our global challenges, the need to mobilize more action and funding for social impact demands that we scale our ambition beyond a single day dedicated to fundraising and volunteering.  What if every day was Giving Tuesday?

Corporations Can Have Transformative Social Impact – Beyond Giving Tuesday

Companies around the world participate in Giving Tuesday because it provides an excellent opportunity to align the corporate brand with doing good, promote corporate giving to consumers, and encourage employees to take action on the company’s social responsibility agenda. As a result, companies gain tremendous brand lift, increased employee engagement and other benefits — in 2020 alone it is estimated that Giving Tuesday generated $72 million in earned media and 3 billion impressions on Twitter.

The Fortune 500 spend 6.4% of total revenue on marketing and customer acquisition, which is nearly $1 trillion. Compare that to corporate giving in 2020 which decreased 6.1% to only $16.88 billion dollars. We know that customers are 4 times more likely to purchase from a brand with purpose and a clear impact strategy. And, we know that there is a $100 trillion funding gap for the world to meet the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Imagine creating billions in new funding for charities, and trillions in new value for your company through improved brand equity, increased employee retention, improved ESG scores and more.

Transforming Daily Operation to Include Social Impact

Research by Boston Consulting Group revealed that Social Impact is 13X more valuable to buyers than other traditional sales incentives. At Givewith, we make it easy to embed social impact into your company’s existing commercial activities – like buying and selling – so your teams can achieve their goals while helping to accelerate positive social and environmental impact, without any additional cost. By redirecting just a small portion of the billions spent on marketing, advertising, client acquisition, and discounts, companies using Givewith create shared value for business, people and planet.

Allowing the ideas behind Giving Tuesday to permeate into the way that companies conduct business on a daily basis is the fastest and most effective way to meet the world’s need for social, environmental, and economic transformation. To learn more, visit www.givewith.com
