BOSTON—Toast (NYSE: TOST), the all-in-one technology platform built for restaurants, today announced a $5 million philanthropic commitment over the next five years to address global food insecurity. The initiative will kick off with a U.S. partnership with No Kid Hungry, a national campaign from Share Our Strength aimed at fighting childhood hunger. Toast plans to amplify these efforts by encouraging its customers and their guests to participate via Toast Fundraising1 campaigns to support the cause, and is launching a new Toast.org grant program to scale the impact of restaurants engaged in local anti-hunger relief efforts across the U.S., along with other philanthropic partnerships and employee volunteering opportunities.
“Toast is committed to enriching the food experience for all. The negative impacts of hunger and food insecurity are profound, and we can make meaningful change when the right resources come together. At Toast, we’re uniquely positioned to mobilize the entire restaurant ecosystem—our customers, our employees, our technology, and our charitable efforts—to make a tangible difference in this critical area,” said Toast CEO and Co-Founder Aman Narang. “I’m proud to commit Toast to engage more deeply in the fight against hunger, starting with our partnership with No Kid Hungry and helping to end childhood hunger.”
Food insecurity is a year-round issue, however, the summer months represent a particularly vulnerable time of year for the millions of children who rely on school meals for their daily nutritional needs. Only 13% of children receiving free or reduced-price meals during the school year have access to them during the summer.
To combat this, No Kid Hungry established the CEO Pledge to End Summer Hunger, aiming to increase the number of children receiving summertime meals from 2.8 million to 31 million nationwide annually. As part of Toast’s commitment to addressing the critical issue of summer hunger, Narang signed the CEO Pledge, joining other leaders from across industries in raising funds and awareness.
“Today, 1 in 5 kids in America live with hunger. Parents and caregivers face financial hardships that force them to choose between buying groceries or paying their bills,” said Billy Shore, Co-Founder and Executive Chair of No Kid Hungry. “Our research shows that families struggle even more during the summer. We, along with partners like Toast and the chefs and restaurants they support, are united by a common goal: feeding people in summer and all year long. We are so grateful for Toast’s efforts and look forward to the continued partnership.”
Beyond the CEO Pledge and existing initiatives, Toast will engage its people, products, philanthropy, customers, and the broader restaurant community in its hunger relief efforts, including:
- A $250,000 grant to help No Kid Hungry will support the implementation of state policies and programs designed to close the summer hunger gap.
- From June through August, every new customer referral will generate a donation from Toast to No Kid Hungry.
- In July, Toast.org will match guest donations to No Kid Hungry campaigns set up through Toast Fundraising, up to $50,000.
- Toast employees will volunteer at summer meal sites and Toast offices to help ensure every child has access to three healthy meals per day when school is out.
These new initiatives build on Toast’s track record of philanthropy and commitment to fighting food insecurity, including recent product enhancements enabling Toast merchants to accept SNAP/EBT payments directly on Toast devices via a partnership with Forage. Toast Fundraising, which launched in 2023, has already helped Toast customers make a difference in this space alongside their communities. In 2024 Diesel Cafe Group in Somerville, MA was able to raise over $30,000 for Community Cooks.
“It’s definitely made our ability to give back easier and made the impact larger,” said Jennifer Park, Founder and Owner of Diesel Cafe. “The fact that we can garner our community and our guests to give back as much as we do is huge.”

Every Earth Month, tree-planting initiatives take center stage—and for good reason. Trees clean our air, cool our cities, and absorb carbon, making them a powerful tool in creating a healthier environment for all. YES! AND at this moment, it also makes sense to expand the conversation to include other impactful environmental actions. By looking beyond trees, we can work to ensure that sustainability efforts are more inclusive, community-driven, and effective.
Yes Trees! AND . . .
Tree planting is a fantastic climate solution when done thoughtfully—in the right places, with the right species, and with long-term care in mind. However, in some cases, tree-planting campaigns can overlook the broader environmental and social needs of a community.
For example:
-
- Urban neighborhoods suffering from extreme heat need not just trees, but also cooling infrastructure like reflective rooftops and accessible green spaces.
- Some ecosystems, like grasslands and wetlands, store more carbon than forests yet receive far less attention.
- Indigenous land stewardship, which has preserved ecosystems for generations, is often overlooked in favor of new planting initiatives.
By broadening our approach, we can amplify the impact of tree planting and create holistic climate solutions that work for everyone.
Consider trying one of these alternative focus areas during Earth Month this year:
Support Community-Led Urban Greening
Instead of planting trees and walking away, we can support local initiatives that engage communities in planting, maintaining, and benefiting from urban forests. Programs that prioritize cooling shade, biodiversity, and long-term care ensure that trees thrive for generations.
For example, Docusign.org has funded the creation of pocket forests through their Local Impact Fund, which provides grants to organizations enhancing urban sustainability in the cities where they have their largest offices. To date they have provided grants that supported new forests in Seattle and Dublin. Docusign employees join forces with the local Forest Maker and community members to both plant and maintain the forest through volunteer events.
In Seattle, Docusign.org worked with SUGi, a nonprofit that provides a 360 degree approach to biodiversity building, ecosystem restoration, and (re)establishing Nature connections in communities. Check out the Seattle Unity Forest as a great example of this partnership.
Protect and Restore Wetlands, Grasslands, and Mangroves
Forests aren’t the only ecosystems that capture carbon. Wetlands and grasslands store carbon even more efficiently while also preventing erosion and protecting wildlife. Supporting conservation efforts for these ecosystems is a powerful climate action.
Consider Salesforce, who in 2021 supported the establishment of the Mangrove Breakthrough Secretariat and invested in eight mangrove restoration and conservation projects to support the Mangrove Breakthrough, including Blue Ventures, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Osa Conservation, One Tree Planted, Fundación Mexicana para el Océano A.C., Perry Institute of Marine Science, Conservation International, and the Sustainable Ocean Alliance Tanzania.
Honor Indigenous Land Stewardship
Many Indigenous communities have been protecting and restoring ecosystems for centuries. Supporting Indigenous-led conservation projects, land rematriation, and traditional ecological practices ensures that climate solutions are guided by deep-rooted wisdom and sustainable management.
Zoom Cares, for example, focuses on supporting indigenous-led and community-based initiatives that work to build thriving communities. They funded the Arctic Eider Society, a Canadian nonprofit that collaborates with Inuit and Cree communities to address the environmental changes impacting sea-ice ecosystems in the Hudson and James Bays. This funding supported the development and management of the SIKU App, a mobile app and web platform designed by and for Inuit communities to facilitate indigenous-led research and environmental monitoring.
Support Community Composting
Organic waste in landfills produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Starting a neighborhood composting program diverts waste while creating nutrient-rich soil for local gardens. It’s a circular solution that builds community connections.
The California Alliance for Community Composting (CACC) is a network of composting advocates, organizations, and community members dedicated to expanding decentralized, community-based composting across California. They focus on supporting small-scale composting sites, promoting compost education, and influencing policy to make composting more accessible. CACC works to reduce food waste, enrich soil health, and strengthen local food systems by empowering grassroots composting initiatives.
Address Resilient Housing and Urban Heat
Trees help reduce urban heat, but so do cool roofs, reflective pavement, and energy-efficient buildings. Supporting projects that address housing and infrastructure improvements can make cities more livable and resilient.
C40 Cities is a network of nearly 100 major cities working together to address climate change. The organization helps cities implement policies and share best practices to reduce emissions, improve air quality, and build climate resilience. Their initiatives focus on areas such as clean energy, sustainable transportation, waste reduction, and urban cooling strategies like green infrastructure and reflective surfaces.
Embrace Upcycling and Waste Reduction
Reducing waste is just as important as planting trees. Upcycling—repurposing old materials into new, useful items—helps cut down on landfill waste and reduces the need for new resource extraction. Supporting circular economy initiatives, sustainable fashion, and creative reuse programs can make a big impact.
For example, Pledge 1% member Liquidonate is a social enterprise that uses proprietary software to match goods from retailers, brands, and other sources with nonprofits, charities, and schools in need.
And Toast, the all-in-one payment platform built for restaurants, has partnered with Food Rescue US, both with an integration in their POS platform so their restaurant customers can indicate they have food to be rescued and donated as well as through a campaign encouraging Toast employees to use the app to rescue food in their community and deliver it to local nonprofits to prevent food waste.
Stick with the Trees Too
This isn’t about abandoning tree planting—it’s about expanding our environmental toolkit. Many regions absolutely benefit from increased tree cover, particularly urban heat islands and deforested areas. The key is thoughtful implementation of the right solution for each ecosystem.
For those who want to support tree planting efforts, consider organizations like One Tree Planted. Many of our Pledge 1% members have worked with One Tree Planted and designed creative campaigns to get their stakeholder communities involved in planting trees. Motivate your community to interact with your social content by planting trees for “likes” or integrate tree planting into your conferences and events. Supporting trees is something everyone can get behind.
Finally, if you want to offer your employees the freedom to choose how they want to get involved and maybe leverage some friendly team competition, you might consider something like the Earth Month EcoChallenge. Running from April 1-30, it invites participants to take part in daily actions promoting environmental and social change. By selecting actions aligned with their values, participants work towards a more sustainable and equitable future. Driven by passionate employees, Atlassian is supporting its employees in logging actions globally throughout the month of April.
This Earth Month, consider which environmental action best suits your local ecology and your stakeholders. Perhaps it’s joining a seagrass restoration effort if you live near the coast, or advocating for green roof installations in your urban neighborhood. By diversifying our approach to environmental stewardship, we create a more resilient, holistic movement—one that recognizes the unique value of all ecosystems.
A 2024 study from the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre found that out of all workplace wellness initiatives—think gym discounts, mindfulness apps, and those weird standing desks—volunteering was the one that actually boosted employee well-being in a meaningful way.
Author: Pledge 1%
Let’s be real—corporate wellness programs can sometimes feel like a lukewarm cup of office coffee: technically beneficial, but ultimately unsatisfying. But what if there was a workplace initiative that actually made employees happier, healthier, and more engaged—without requiring them to sit through a virtual escape room or a yoga session in a windowless conference room? Enter: Volunteering.
According to a slew of recent studies, volunteering isn’t just good for communities—it’s a full-blown, scientifically-backed superpower for employee well-being. Forget the half-hearted lunchtime meditation; giving back is the secret sauce to a thriving workforce.
The Science of Doing Good (and Feeling Good)
It’s no secret that employees in the U.S. are facing increasing stress due to political uncertainty, economic fluctuations, and general existential dread fueled by the never-ending news cycle. According to a 2024 report by the American Psychological Association, workplace stress is at an all-time high, with employees citing political instability as a significant contributor to their anxiety. In such a turbulent environment, corporate volunteering programs offer a rare opportunity for employees to step outside their daily grind and engage in something positive, reaffirming their sense of control and purpose.
Let’s start with the hard facts. A 2024 study from the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre found that out of all workplace wellness initiatives—think gym discounts, mindfulness apps, and those weird standing desks—volunteering was the one that actually boosted employee well-being in a meaningful way. Employees who participated in company-supported volunteer programs reported higher levels of job satisfaction, lower stress levels, and even improved mental health. (Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre 2024)
Another survey of 2,000 employees, published in Forbes, revealed that nearly 50% of those who volunteered experienced increased happiness, and one in three felt less stressed. That’s right—helping out at a food bank might be more effective at lowering your blood pressure than a wellness webinar on “Finding Your Inner Calm.” (Forbes 2024)
But Why Does It Work?
It turns out, humans are wired to feel good when they do good. Psychologists call it the “helper’s high”—that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when you help someone out. Volunteering activates the brain’s reward center, releases endorphins, and fosters a sense of purpose. And let’s be honest, feeling like you’re actually making a difference beats the existential dread of back-to-back Zoom meetings.
Volunteering: The Corporate Culture Game-Changer
Beyond the personal benefits, volunteering also works wonders for company culture. A study by Blackfin Group found that businesses with robust employee volunteer programs saw increased collaboration, stronger workplace relationships, and—get this—even higher productivity. (Blackfin Group 2024)
Why? Because nothing bonds people quite like collectively realizing they have no idea how to properly paint a community center wall or attempting to build a bike for charity with minimal assembly skills. It’s team-building without the awkwardness, and everyone wins.
How Companies Can Get It Right
So, how can companies tap into the magic of volunteering without making it feel like yet another mandatory corporate initiative (looking at you, “optional” 8 AM wellness walks)?
-
- Make it easy – Give employees paid volunteer time, or better yet, coordinate group outings so they don’t have to organize it themselves.
- Let them choose – Not everyone wants to plant trees in the rain. Offer a variety of opportunities so employees can find something they genuinely enjoy. Or let them follow their passions (which also keeps your company out of any political discourse about a particular cause).
- Celebrate participation – Highlight volunteer stories, share impact metrics, and maybe throw in some free snacks. People will show up for snacks.
The Bottom Line
If your workplace is serious about employee well-being, volunteering is the way to go. It’s good for employees, good for businesses, and good for the world. So, go ahead, swap out one of those corporate icebreakers for a volunteer day. Your employees—and their sanity—will thank you.

What motivates you?
If you asked Mallory Boulter, she might say she’s a running enthusiast, or an avid traveler. But the reality is that she’s much more than that. Inspired by the Japanese concept of Ikigai — considering what you love, what you’re good at, and what the world needs when figuring out your life purpose — Boulter has built hers around work that fuels her.
At her core is a belief that when people have access to opportunity, they transform their own futures. And while it’s true that she loves traveling and takes running seriously — she’s currently training for the 2025 Tokyo and London marathons — her true passion lies in showing up for others, which she has cultivated throughout her career. It has also made her an inspiration to countless other women, landing her a spot on Women We Admire’s Top 50 Women Leaders of Seattle for 2024.
When Boulter was working at PwC she became involved in the firm’s Project Belize program, which delivered financial education programs to youth in the community. As she saw the impact of teaching budgeting, savings and financial education, she decided she wanted to elevate this opportunity in other areas of the world. And so, she did just that — starting on a journey that continues to this day.
Along this journey, she has found a workplace where she can bring this purpose to life. She joined Remitly because she saw firsthand the potential of remittances in creating financial opportunity, and now, as VP of Global Impact at Remitly, she drives initiatives that expand access to, and use of, digital financial services for communities worldwide.
‘More Than Just Sending Money’
Remitly was founded to make it easier to send remittances, or money payments, across borders, facilitating a critical exchange that millions of people use every day. “At their core, remittances are more than just sending money,” Boulter explained. “They represent human connection, trust, economic opportunity and resilience. They tell the story of the resiliency of our customers, many of whom move across the world to create opportunities for themselves and their loved ones. In doing so, they become important contributors to economic growth both in the countries to which they move, and in communities around the world.”

Following Energy to Create Lasting Impact Together
For Boulter, impact isn’t just about big initiatives — it’s about showing up, again and again, for people — by focusing on what brings you energy and meaning.
She recently returned from her 10th trip to Tanzania, celebrating a decade of friendships and partnerships with local women entrepreneurs and young leaders, centered on creating access to education and small-business expansion through digital financial services.
“I’ve always believed in the potential of education and economic opportunity, and in 2014, I visited Tanzania to work with the community at a local school,” Boulter said. “What started as one trip turned into ten, and now, a decade later, we’ve built friendships, celebrated graduations, opened bank accounts and more. On my most recent trip, I got to see how much these incredible kids have grown up — hearing about their dreams to be doctors, pilots, teachers and entrepreneurs, and seeing them bring these dreams to life.”
Boulter is especially grateful for how Remitly has transformed the way she supports these communities. Before joining Remitly, she said she would think back to the years when she used to carry cash on planes, worried the money would get lost in transit, or that she’d incur countless ATM fees.
“And then during COVID, I wondered: How would I get funds there when I could no longer travel?” said Boulter. “And that’s when I remembered Remitly. And now — just recently — I was sitting with a friend in Tanzania as she received the funds that I sent her through M-Pesa, a mobile wallet, via Remitly. It was amazing to see how quickly the money was received.”
That seamless access to financial resources is at the heart of Remitly’s vision. And it’s what fuels Boulter’s work every day.

Solving Problems That Matter
For Boulter, finding purpose comes from solving real problems.
Remitly’s co-founder, Matt Oppenheimer, once shared on a Fintech One-on-One podcast that a piece of advice from a mentor that has stuck with him, is to find a problem that pisses you off — and solve it. For Boulter, that problem is the lack of financial access for more than a billion people around the world, and the solution is creating financial services that meet real people where they are at. Her work in Tanzania has provided learnings and insights as she works to solve these challenges in her role today.
“After 10 years working with this community of incredible women and youth, I’ve learned so much from partnering with them — about creativity, entrepreneurship, leadership and love — and I’ve seen the true impact that financial access creates,” Boulter said. “Now, I get to work on solving these problems every day at work. That’s what fuels me and what keeps me here. At Remitly we often say ‘we’re just getting started.’ And that’s so true.”
Over $50 Billion, 18 Languages — 1 Universal Vision
Since its inception in 2011, Remitly has been laser-focused on making cross-border payments more affordable, accessible, secure and reliable, through customer-centric digital innovation — and the hard work has paid off. In 2024, over $50 billion was sent worldwide through Remitly, connecting customers and their recipients in over 170 countries, ensuring accessibility around the world. This growth is a direct reflection of how the company is driving its universal vision: “to transform lives with trusted financial services that transcend borders.”
Leading with Purpose: Lessons in Leadership
Boulter’s experiences — both globally and at Remitly — have shaped her approach to leadership.
“This work has taught me that the best leaders aren’t the ones with all the answers; they’re the ones who are deeply listening and learning,” she said. In one of my early visits to Tanzania, I learned that lasting change is rooted in trust — and that trust takes time. At first I came in with ideas, but when I stopped and asked, the women in the community told me something else. And so I learned — it wasn’t about what I thought I knew, or how I wanted to help — it was about listening to the community and recognizing that they knew what they needed the best.”
This lesson has shaped her work and her leadership, translating into how she leads people, builds teams and fosters collaboration in the workplace and in local community work, where she is a board member of the Boys and Girls Clubs of King County, a leading youth development organization. At Remitly, she is focused on bringing that lesson to life — from advancing financial inclusion to supporting communities through Remitly’s Pledge 1% commitment.
“We’re not just here to move money — we’re elevating opportunity by transforming cross-border financial services – making them more accessible, secure and reliable,” Boulter said. “And that’s a responsibility we take seriously every single day.”

Looking Ahead
For Boulter, Global Impact isn’t just a title – It’s the foundation of everything she does. Whether she’s training for a marathon, working alongside teams at Remitly or visiting loved ones in Tanzania, the goal remains the same: to create pathways to opportunity, together.
“When people have access to the tools and resources they need, they do incredible things,” she said. “And that’s what keeps me going.”
And when asked for her best leadership advice? She said:
“I’ve truly learned that what we do every day matters — and more importantly — why we do it matters. What’s the problem that fuels your passion? What brings you energy? Lean into that, and watch what happens.”

Originally founded as The Girls Club in 2011 by Ann Dowley Spillane during her cancer treatment, the organisation began as a supportive community to share ideas, advice and encouragement. In 2017, the centre evolved under the leadership of CEO Linda Goggin James, who has continued Ann’s mission with a wide range of holistic therapies, counselling services and support groups.
With a foundation rooted in compassion and community, Iris House remains a beacon of hope for those on their cancer journey.

Author: Pledge 1% team
At Pledge 1%, we work to inspire, empower, and amplify the social impact efforts of companies and individuals around the world. And over the last 10 years, over 18,000 members joined us in taking the pledge and evangelizing the idea that leveraging corporate assets for good is good for the world and good for business.
Of course, taking the pledge is just the first step. And real impact comes when these pledges come to life.
This year we launched what will become a regular Pledge 1% Member Survey to better understand how we are doing as a movement, what our members value, and how Pledge 1% can better support their journey toward creating positive change.
I’m excited to be able to share a few key takeaways from the survey and outline a few actionable steps we’re taking to enhance our alignment with member needs.
Key Takeaways
Most companies are actively fulfilling their pledge – with a focus on volunteering.
-
- 82% companies say they are actively working to fulfill their pledge
Taking a pledge is an important first step, but the real challenge lies in turning that commitment into action. Remarkably, 82% of companies that have joined Pledge 1% are actively fulfilling their pledges, channeling their efforts into a variety of impactful social programs. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the time pledge is the most popular pledge type with most companies supporting activities related to volunteering. This trend mirrors the broader corporate social responsibility (CSR) landscape, where employee engagement programs are highly accessible for companies of all sizes and stages.
Most companies report strong support for social impact
Despite recent headlines suggesting companies are pulling back from social impact, our survey found that members actually have strong support from their leadership and employees for integrating impact into their business:
-
- 66% companies report that senior leadership is highly committed to social impact programs
- 75% companies have social impact goals
- 75% companies align their social impact and business goals
- 68% companies say Leadership + Employees are aware of their social impact goals
- 68% companies say that employees know they have taken the pledge
Most companies are helping to grow the movement
Pledge 1% members aren’t just embracing social impact—they’re actively spreading the word.
-
- 60% of respondents said that they had discussed the value of taking the pledge in the last 6 months.
Pledge 1% members are seeing the value in embedding impact into their companies and they are evangelizing their success with peers. This is how exponential change happens!
While overall satisfaction with Pledge 1% programs is good, the survey revealed a few areas of potential growth.
In the survey, we included a few questions to help us better understand members’ needs and how well Pledge 1% is meeting them. And while our Net Promoter and CSAT scores were high, we also discovered that less than half of our members were actively accessing our resources and community. While many expressed interest in joining communities of practice or accessing community, few had actually done so.
Our call to action: Ensure Pledge 1% resources and programs are more accessible and easier to find and share. Provide enablement and advice on how to add additional pledge types as your impact programs mature.
Our call to action: Strengthen advocacy resources for members to help expand our audience and grow the movement.
Most companies agreed that seeing influential brands and CEOs advocating for the integration of impact into business was most helpful in growing the movement.
Our call to action: Lean into highlighting stories of impact and thought leadership from our leading companies and CEOs.
Thank You for Your Feedback
We are deeply grateful to every member who participated in this survey. Your insights not only highlight the strengths of our movement but also guide us toward meaningful improvements.
Together, we’re building a future where giving back is a fundamental part of every business. Stay tuned for updates as we implement your suggestions and continue to innovate to support your journey toward creating positive change.
